Joshua (21) spent 6 weeks in St Louis, Senegal as part of his University year abroad. His French is at an excellent level and he passed the CELTA English Teaching Qualification so that he could offer his skills to this amazing organisation. The talibés are boys living in a form of modern slavery who need help and support to be reunited with their families. His report is worth a read: "Maison de la Gare was not only a fantastic charity to volunteer for, but offered a great first experience of travelling in Africa. It was challenging but ultimately so worthwhile, especially given that there isn’t strictly a common language, you have to work together to find a middle ground between Wolof, French and English. This was definitely a tad intimidating on day one, but it became so enriching to teach French, English and to learn some Wolof along the way. I have been completely immersed in a French speaking charity and a French speaking host family. Everyone I met, whether from the charity, friends of the family or people out and about were the friendliest and most welcoming people I have ever met. It’s true that Senegalese ‘Teranga’ (hospitality) is central to this beautiful country’s culture. The host family were such a great support, I had the opportunity to try all sorts of local cuisine, understand more about Senegalese culture and they made me feel as though I were part of their family. The support from Maison de la Gare is quite possibly unmatched, through every step of the process they are there and wanting to help. Throughout my stay I had the opportunity to not only explore Saint-Louis but also travel and discover other sights in Senegal. A highlight and a memory which I won’t forget was a trip I made to Touba to visit the mosque, which was just incredible. Whilst Africa and charity work, especially with vulnerable people in society, may seem daunting, Maison de la Gare offers an experience which will help you to realise that it is the best adventure you can have. As ever, Emily was fantastic from the initial communication with the charity right through until I landed home. For anyone who wants an immersive French language experience, who wants to develop their teaching skills, and who wants to explore such a rich culture, I would say Masion de la Gare, Saint-Louis, is the place to go!! Thank you Emily!"
